Mosquitoes, long recognized as vectors of disease, have profoundly impacted human health, economies, and ecosystems throughout history. The multifaceted dynamics of human-mosquito interactions emphasize the enduring struggle against mosquito-borne diseases. Despite significant scientific advancements, these diseases persist, necessitating ongoing research, prevention and control efforts. With over 3500 species across 41 genera, mosquitoes present a complex challenge, compounded by their role in transmitting diseases to both humans and wildlife. Mosquitoes undergo a four-stage life cycle: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Eggs are laid in water or moist areas, hatching within days to a year, depending on species and environmental conditions. Larvae feed and grow in water, undergoing four instars before pupating. Pupae, active in the water, transform into adults. Only females bite for blood needed to develop eggs, potentially transmitting diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika. Each species has specific modes of infection; for example, Anopheles transmits malaria, Culex spreads Japanese Encephalitis, and Aedes carries diseases like dengue and Zika. Understanding mosquito biology, including its life cycle, behaviours, and ecological roles, is paramount for developing effective control strategies while minimizing environmental impact. Moreover, recognizing the socioeconomic toll of mosquito-borne diseases underscores the urgency of comprehensive intervention strategies. By integrating knowledge of mosquito biology with interdisciplinary approaches, stakeholders can work collaboratively to address the root causes of mosquito-borne diseases and promote global health and well-being. Regrettably, there are currently no vaccines or drugs to treat most of these diseases, making vector control the primary method of prevention. So, there is a need of mosquito control through source reduction and many newer techniques as well.
