摘要

The Culicidae, the largest insect family globally, was explored in this chapter, with the Neotropical region exhibiting the highest biodiversity. Mosquitoes, notorious disease vectors, annually afflict millions with diseases, like malaria and dengue, posing formidable challenges to global health. With 3721 species, Culicidae traces its origins back 120 million years, undergoing substantial diversification during the Jurassic period. The exploration of mitogenomes offers crucial insights into the structural conservation and evolutionary dynamics across Anopheles species. Maintaining a consistent diploid chromosome count of six, mosquitoes exhibit distinct karyotypic variations between anopheline and culicine species. This chapter encapsulates a comprehensive exploration of mosquito studies, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of research blending biology, genetics, and evolution to decipher the enigmatic world of these resilient and often perilous insects.
