Mosquito-Borne Veterinary Diseases

Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) significantly threaten human and animal health. The causative pathogens, i.e., viruses, bacteria, protozoans, and nematodes, of these diseases are vectored by different mosquito species, mainly, Anopheles, Culex, and Aedes. These soft-bodied minute dipterans are implicated in the transmission of some deadly viruses, namely, dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika virus. Besides that, protozoan and filarial parasites also cause some other essential vector-borne diseases, such as malaria and lymphatic filariasis in animals and humans. Tropical and subtropical regions around the world are significant targets of mosquito-borne diseases. The Global Vector Control Response (GVCR) 2017–2030 has suggested to develop strategic management plan for the vector-borne diseases and their outbreaks with immediate effect. Here, it attempts to give an overview of the vector species, causes, and symptoms of various medico-veterinary vital diseases transmitted by these mosquitoes. A general understanding can address the critical issues regarding significant vector-borne diseases.
