Mosquito-Borne Human Diseases

Mosquitoes are the transmitters of several deadly diseases. Protozoan parasites and viruses are the main causes of vector-borne diseases. Most diseases spread by mosquitoes are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The Global Vector Control Response (GVCR) 2017–2030 recommends the strategic control of vector-borne disease outbreaks. It is proposed that improved infrastructure, monitoring systems, and technical capacity are necessary to prevent vector-borne diseases and maintain human health. Mosquito-borne diseases pose the greatest threat to public health worldwide and are typically associated with severe economic hardships in the countries they infect. Vector-borne diseases have been on the rise and have reemerged in the last 40 years due to a variety of causes including population growth, migration, urbanization, globalization, lack of public health infrastructure, awareness, etc. We attempt to focus mostly on causes, symptoms, diagnosis, therapy, and control in this book chapter. With a general awareness, the key challenges related to significant vector-borne diseases may be addressed.
