Agricultural Waste Degradation: A Sustainable Solution Powered by Anaerobic Microbes

摘要

As the global population increases, ensuring food, energy, and water security becomes progressively more complex. Anaerobic digestion and composting are promising waste management solutions that address this challenge by diverting organic waste and creating valuable products. Livestock manure is a rich source of organic matter and nutrients, but improper management can lead to environmental pollution. Fortunately, it can be transformed into valuable resources through anaerobic digestion. This process not only addresses manure management challenges but also generates biogas, a renewable energy source. Similarly, leftover plant materials like straw and stalks, which can be a disposal burden for farmers, can be diverted to anaerobic digestion. These crop residues are primarily composed of cellulose, along with lignin and hemicellulose. By using anaerobic digestion, these materials can be converted into biogas and transformed into soil amendments, offering a sustainable solution for waste management. Spoiled fruits, vegetables, and other organic discards from food processing plants can be harnessed through anaerobic digestion. This process not only reduces waste but also generates biogas for energy and a nutrient-rich biofertilizer, promoting a more sustainable food cycle. The current chapter focuses on improving process efficiency and maximizing the value of end products. From an environmental perspective, anaerobic digestion presents advantages due to its lower GHG emissions and the generation of biogas, a renewable energy source.
