Odontogenic Myxoma/Myxofibroma

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a rare benign tumor of the jaw derived from ectodermal mesenchymal cells. It is called odontogenic myxofibroma (OMF) when the tumor is dominated by collagen fibers. Odontogenic myxoma mostly presents as painless, slow-growing mass in the jaw, and is usually diagnosed for maxillofacial malformation caused by bone distention. Odontogenic myxoma has a low incidence, accounting for 3–20% of all odontogenic tumors [1–5]. The range of onset age is wide, from 5 to 56 years old, but it mainly occurs in young people, especially in adults between 20 and 40 years old, with no significant gender difference [5–8]. Tumors may occur in almost any part of the jaw, and is more common in the mandible than the maxilla, accounting for about two-thirds. Despite a benign tumor, OM is locally aggressive with a high recurrence rate after surgical treatment [3, 5, 8, 9].
