The Xuande Emperor (1399–1435), also known by his temple name as the Emperor Xuanzong of Ming, personal name Zhu Zhanji, was the fifth emperor of the Ming dynasty, following the reigns of the Hongwu Emperor (1368–1398), the Jianwen Emperor (1398–1402), the Yongle Emperor (1402–1435), the Hongxi Emperor (1424–1425). He ascended to the throne at the age of 28, with the era name Xuande. His reign lasted for 10 years until his untimely demise at the age of 37 due to illness. Xuande porcelain, particularly known for its exquisite blue-and-white pieces, was one of the hallmarks of his reign.
