摘要

Dementia, a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder, presents a pressing need for alternative interventions that can alleviate symptoms and enhance the overall quality of life for affected individuals. This chapter aims to bridge the gap between conventional pharmaceutical approaches and complementary therapies addressing pathophysiology, cognitive decline, and related symptoms associated with dementia. Several traditional herbs were recognized for their potential cognitive benefits among the herbs scrutinized for their neuroprotective and cognitive-enhancing properties. By synthesizing existing literature and empirical research, this chapter delves into the active compounds or phytochemistry within these herbs and their mechanisms of action that may positively impact cognitive function. Findings suggest that certain herbal compounds exhibit neuroprotective effects, promote neuronal growth, and mitigate oxidative stress, contributing to improved cognitive outcomes in individuals with dementia. In conclusion, the chapter underscores the potential of traditional herbal medicine as a complementary source for new interventional approaches to conventional dementia therapy.
