Fungi as Biofertilizers: A Sustainable Approach to Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture aims to produce enough food, fiber, and other agricultural products to meet present demands while protecting the environment and agricultural systems for future generations. It includes socially conscious, environmentally sound, and economically feasible actions. A biofertilizer is a mixture of live microorganisms that penetrate the rhizosphere, or inside the plant, when applied to soil, seeds, or plant surfaces. The use of biofertilizers is an important factor of sustainable agriculture due to their ability to enhance soil fertility by converting atmospheric nitrogen into a soluble form that plants can easily uptake. They also contribute to soil health and fertility. Fungal biofertilizers contribute to soil health by their symbiotic relationship with the plants and supporting nutrient uptake. They also facilitate the uptake of nitrogen by plants, which lowers the emission of greenhouse gases and hence contributes to the mitigation of climate change. It acts as a sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers, thereby reducing environmental threats such as nutrient depletion or soil degradation. The potential of fungi as biofertilizers emphasizes the significance of additional research work to realize their advantages in contemporary agriculture fully. Adopting fungal biofertilization signals the beginning of a peaceful cohabitation between human agriculture and the natural environment and a road toward sustainable agricultural techniques.
