Regional Anesthesia: General Considerations

Regional anesthesia is fast becoming an integral part of anesthesiologist practice. Successful practice of it depends not only on the expertise of the practitioner but also on precise and proper preparation of the patient, equipment as well as the provider. For this it is extremely important to follow certain protocols, guidelines to minimize the failure rates as well as harm not only to the patient but also to decrease the incidence of work-related disorders for the anesthesiologist. In this chapter we have covered the general considerations with the objective to put emphasis on proper preparation of every aspect of Regional Block, pondering over the need, contraindications of block and above all the use of ergonomics while placement of Ultrasound guided blocks to heightened the percentage of success and keeping in mind the well-being of provider too.
