Virtual Rehabilitation and Tele-Physiotherapy Approaches

VR (virtual reality) is an immersive digital technology that simulates realistic environments using head-mounted displays and motion tracking. It engages various sensory pathways like visual, auditory, and proprioceptive inputs simultaneously. VR (virtual reality) rehabilitation concept is grounded in the biopsychosocial model, targeting physical impairment, maladaptive cognitions, and emotional distress simultaneously. VR may reduce central sensitization commonly observed in chronic low back. VR also produces analgesic effects primarily through attentional distraction mechanisms. Gamified exercises and immersive environments encourage active participation and functional improvement in LBP patients. Tele-physiotherapy is delivery of physiotherapy services (including assessment, exercise supervision, education, and monitoring of progress) remotely by digital communication/information technologies such as video conferencing, mobile applications, and wearable devices. Tele-physiotherapy addresses accessibility, efficiency, low-cost delivery, personalization, and patient engagement, making it a practical and effective approach for LBP management. Evidence-based tele-physiotherapy relies on structured exercise programs, patient education, behavioral strategies, and technology-assisted monitoring, ensuring safe, effective, and personalized management of LBP. The future of tele-physiotherapy in managing low back pain (LBP) is promising, driven by technological advancements, patient-centered care models, and increasing demand for accessible rehabilitation. Integration with artificial intelligence can analyze patient performance data from wearable sensors or apps, enabling personalized exercise programs, predictive analytics, and adaptive progression. Combining VR with tele-physiotherapy can enhance motivation, engagement, and adherence.
