Medical Education and Simulation in Spine Training

Medical education in spine care is evolving in response to increasing procedural complexity, heightened patient safety expectations, and the need for standardized, competency-based training. Traditional apprenticeship-based models face limitations related to variable case exposure, work-hour restrictions, and ethical constraints on experiential learning in high-risk procedures. Simulation-based education has emerged as a critical adjunct to conventional training, offering a safe, reproducible environment for developing technical skills, clinical decision-making, and non-technical competencies without risk to patients. Advances in simulation technologies—including cadaveric models, task trainers, virtual reality, and augmented reality—have expanded opportunities for skills acquisition across different stages of training. This chapter reviews contemporary approaches to medical education and simulation in spine training, examining curriculum integration, assessment of competence, and emerging technologies, while highlighting their role in improving training quality, patient safety, and consistency of spine care delivery.
