Multimodal Pharmacotherapy for Lumbar Spine Care
摘要
Low back pain (LBP) is a universal health issue affecting the quality of life of people, workplace functioning, and healthcare systems around the world. This chapter reviews LBP treatment comprehensively with a focus on the critical function of multimodal pharmacotherapy within a holistic model of care. After a review of the anatomy, biomechanics, and several types of LBP, the chapter delves into the intricate relationships between the factors that determine this disease. The elemental elements of multimodal treatment are analyzed, with special focus placed on the necessity of a multidisciplinary team, medicine, physical therapy, psychiatric procedures, and patient education. The most frequent treatments, including manual manipulation, exercise, and complementary treatment, are exhaustively discussed. Pharmacotherapy is given ample attention throughout this chapter, which addresses a number of classes of drugs, modes of action, and issues of safety. Orthopedic treatment is also addressed, ranging from injections to surgical options. There are also special considerations presented for specific patient populations, including pregnant women, the elderly, individuals with chronic pain, and individuals with spinal instability. Finally, recent advances in the treatment of LBP are discussed, such as individualized medicine, novel methods of medication delivery, and technology integration. This chapter highlights the importance of a patient-focused, multimodal approach that thoughtfully integrates medication into an overall care plan to give physicians the information and tools they require to treat LBP.
