Evaluation of Jackfruit “Artocarpus Heterophyllus” Peel Waste as a Potential Lost Circulation Material in Water-Based Drilling Fluid

This research aimed to evaluate the potential of Jackfruit peel (JFP) as lost circulation material (LCM) additive in water-based drilling fluid. Two parameters such as particle size distribution (PSD) and concentration of JFP were used to establish their effects on the filtration and rheological properties of the water-based mud (WBM). The base mud formulation and testing procedures for the properties of drilling fluid was conducted using the American Petroleum Institute (API) standard. The JFP was sieved and categorized into three PSD (fine, medium, intermediate) and three concentrations (5, 10, 15 g). A blank mud was also prepared and used as a reference to see the improvement on the filtration and rheological properties. The test results showed that with an increasing concentration of JFP, the values of rheological properties had considerably improved compared to the blank mud. For filtration test results, adding more concentration yielded an optimum decrease in fluid loss volume and fine PSD gave the best result due to finer particles tend to seal fractures in the formation more effectively. Mud cake thickness, with an increased concentration of JFP, produced better results for the mud as this could seal the borehole wall and reduce the filtrate loss. Based on these overall findings, JFP has significant effects in the mud properties especially as LCM additive in water-based drilling fluid.
