Microplastics in Foods

Microplastic pollution has emerged as a pressing environmental and public health issue, with widespread contamination observed in various ecosystems and food chains worldwide. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of microplastics in foods, addressing their sources, types, detection methods, occurrence in different food types, human health implications, regulatory frameworks, mitigation strategies, and future research directions. Microplastics originate from diverse sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic debris, microbeads in personal care products, synthetic textiles, and industrial processes. These minute particles pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health due to their persistence and potential to accumulate toxic contaminants. Detection and analysis of microplastics in foods present challenges due to their small size and complex composition. Various techniques, such as microscopy, spectroscopy, and chemical analysis, are employed to identify and quantify microplastics in food samples accurately. Microplastics have been detected in a wide range of food types, including seafood, drinking water, salt, agricultural products, and processed foods. Ingestion of microplastics may lead to physical injury, chemical exposure, inflammatory responses, and hormonal disruption, raising concerns about potential health impacts. Future research directions include investigating the environmental fate and transport of microplastics, assessing their ecological and human health impacts, developing analytical methods and detection techniques, and exploring innovative mitigation and remediation technologies.
