Microplastics in Aquatic Environment

Microplastics, which are microscopic plastic particles smaller than 5 mm in size, are becoming increasingly problematic in aquatic ecosystems. They enter the environment through ordinary plastics, industrial processes, and wastewater treatment plants. Microplastics endanger the health of living beings and the whole ecosystem by being found in a variety of aquatic systems, from freshwater to saltwater. Microplastics accumulate in aquatic habitats as a consequence of the extensive use and poor disposal of synthetic polymer substance. Aquatic species can consume these particles, potentially affecting the entire food chain. Microplastics are prevalent in aquatic ecosystems, exposing many aquatic animals to them and highlighting the broad nature of the problem. A variety of elements, including turbulent water regimes, airstream, and currents, influence the dispersion of microplastics within the water column in aquatic settings. Furthermore, biofouling can lower microplastics’ surface hydrophobicity, leading them to sink and collect in aquatic sediments. The significant concentration of microplastics in the middle of the water column emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue holistically. To put it briefly, the prevalence of microplastics in aquatic habitats is a major environmental hazard that necessitates thorough understanding and efficient remedies. The existence of microplastics in both freshwater and marine habitats emphasizes the importance of tackling this issue in order to maintain aquatic life and ecosystem health. More study and coordinated efforts are required in order to lessen the influence of microplastics on aquatic habitats and the animals that live inside them.
