Environmental Risks and Hazards of Microplastics

摘要

Microplastics are minute plastic particles that are generated during the manufacturing of commercial goods and the deterioration of large-sized plastic components. This degradation is the result of exposure of plastic materials to external components, like sunlight, ocean waves, and many others. The significant attention microplastics have garnered is due to their potential to cause serious environmental harm. These particles are regarded as contaminants that may be harmful to the environment and the health of animals. Studies have shown that these small plastic fragments release harmful additives, can absorb other substances, and can serve as surfaces for biofilms. As a result, they increase the availability, toxicity, and mobility of numerous hazardous substances by acting as reservoirs for them. Furthermore, when consumed by smaller organisms, microplastics may present a risk of trophic transfer to humans and other higher animals. As they further break down, they can breach cell membranes, heightening associated risks. Exposure to microplastics can impact feeding habits, metabolic functions, reproduction, and behavior. Additionally, they may also alter the physical characteristics of water and soil, endangering ecosystems and living things. Enhancing international efforts to minimize pollution, creating biodegradable polymers and additives, and lowering consumption while encouraging the reuse of plastic are among the suggested remedies. This chapter explores the origins, uptake, and impacts of microplastics on the pedosphere and hydrosphere.
