Within the academic community, an escalating concern has emerged regarding the proliferation of paper mills, unscrupulous enterprises dedicated to crafting fraudulent scientific papers upon request. These organizations also offer a range of additional services, including manuscript submission and correspondence assistance, the procurement of counterfeit co-authors, citation manipulation, and the fraud inflation of metric indicators. Employing a multitude of deceitful tactics such as fabrication and falsification of data and images, plagiarism, multiple submissions, and fake peer review reports, these fraudulent entities strive to publication for the fake papers. Invariably, the products originating from paper mills lack genuine experimental data, rendering them false and misleading. Despite the growing body of evidence about paper mills, their activities are not easy to expose and prove. The current development of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT and other chatbots based on large language models (LLMs), presents novel challenges and opportunities for preventing research misconduct.
