Bylines and Beyond: Unpacking Authorship in Research Publications
摘要
This chapter discusses the intricate dynamics of authorship, addressing the challenges and conflicts inherent in the assignment of credit. Emphasising the significance of proper authorship in reporting research, the chapter explores the prevalent criteria for authorship, issues related to lead and co-authorship, and the responsibilities authors bear for the integrity of their work. Additionally, it explores the contentious topic of authorship order and the complexities associated with sequence determination. It explores the rising trend of equal authorship and proposes strategies to enhance transparency and prevent disputes. The delineation between authorship, contributorship, and acknowledgement is explored, stressing the need for clear communication to distinguish these roles and recognise diverse contributions in academic collaborations. Challenges within existing authorship guidelines and the complexities of resolving authorship conflicts have been discussed. The chapter concludes with recommendations of guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) for editors to identify and manage potential authorship issues.
