Scrap Quality and Scrap Pre-heating

Steel scrap is by far the most important raw material to produce liquid steel in the EAF, therefore all steel scrap properties have a large effect on the operation of the EAF, on energy consumption, productivity, etc. Steel scrap is a very heterogeneous material, it requires an efficient processing to obtain high quality scrap, with a minimum concentration of residual elements. Scrap-preheating is today a common practice because has a large contribution to decrease the consumption of electric energy. This chapter also provides an updated review on the pre-heating technologies of steel scrap.
