Electric Power Quality

The standard energy for the EAF is electric energy. Electric energy is not only an expensive form of energy but also a source of CO2 emissions because its current production mainly depends on fossil fuels. These reasons explain the need to decrease the consumption of electric energy in EAF steelmaking. In previous chapters the decrease of energy consumption was based on changes to the metallurgical practice. In this chapter the electric efficiency of the electric power supply is analyzed in some detail with the limitations imposed due to the academic background of the author as a metallurgical engineer. I hope readers who have the background on electrical engineering and experience in the EAF can provide feedback to improve a further edition of this chapter.
