Hot Metal and Hot DRI

Hot metal and DRI are very different raw materials. Hot metal is not a suitable material for the EAF because of its limitation on the oxygen injection capacity, in comparison with the BOF, however countries with a high production of hot metal have included this raw material as an alternative to decrease electric energy consumption in the EAF. On the other hand, the latest technologies for DRI include the production of hot DRI which also has benefits to decrease the consumption of electric energy. This chapter provides an overview about the metallurgical practices with these raw materials.
