State of the Art of Omics Technologies in Ornamental Plant Research

Horticultural crops have a remarkable range of ornamental species having a great aesthetic value. Ornamental plants contribute to the beautification of the environment. The advancement of sequencing technology has led to the use of omics research in ornamental plants, generating an enormous amount of omics data, including genome, transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, and more. Nevertheless, the examination of individual omics presents significant constraints, necessitating the immediate adoption of multi-omics approaches in the investigation of ornamental plants. Although, there are growing evidences suggesting the application of omics technology in the horticulture plants, the ornamental plants are seldom included in the list of species with sequenced genomes. Nevertheless, new resources are being continually added at an accelerated pace to the ornamental horticulture crops through multitude of omics. Continuing advances in “omics methodologies and instrumentation” are enhancing the understanding of complex mechanisms underlying the aesthetic appearance. This chapter will provide an overview that will primarily examine genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomics advances in important horticulture crops like lilium, roses, orchids, etc.
