Tissue Culture Mediated Interventions in Ornamental Plants

Ornamental plants have been a worldwide trading commodity that has revolutionized the horticulture industry by generating a multitude of novel plant varieties. Due to domestication, there is a loss of diversity in the wild population of some ornamental plant species. Therefore, tissue culture-based biotechnological approaches are necessary for mass propagation, and conservation, for commercial purposes. Many ornamental plants are successfully propagated under in vitro conditions through direct and indirect organogenesis. Recent studies have also reported somatic embryogenesis as a promising technique for mass propagation in a short interval of time. For long-term conservation, the emergence of vitrification-based techniques has significantly enhanced the feasibility of cryopreservation as a means for safeguarding threatened ornamental plants over extended periods.
