In the blink of an eye, 40 years have passed since China embarked on its policy of reform and opening-up. In an era of profound social transformation, we may seemly have been too accustomed to noticing the tremendous changes that have taken place in our political, economic, social, and cultural areas, but on reflection and in retrospection, it is not difficult to find that these changes have brought about the “Chinese miracle” which has astonished the world. This great achievement has all been the result of the game between the market and the field of power in China’s reform and opening-up. Communication, as a form of power, has become more visible in everyday life, particularly with the emergence and widespread use of the Internet. While top-down political reforms and economic changes are taking place in Chinese society in general, bottom-up changes in people’s mindsets have never ceased, and this quiet revolution has fundamentally deconstructed and reconstructed social relations in social interactions, thus changing the functioning of social institutions and mechanisms and leading to revolutions in social systems and structures.
