Looking back at the development of communication studies in China between 1978 and 2018 at the time node of the 40th year since the implementation of the reform and opening up, we can see the continued exploration and development of political communication in step with the evolution of the socialist democratic political practice with Chinese characteristics. Although it is still very young, it has made some achievements. The scope of political communication is broader. In terms of disciplines, it has extended into political science, communication, journalism, sociology, psychology, etc. In terms of research topics, it covers the functions, carriers, thought, and system of political communication. In recent years, research in this field has developed rapidly, with achievements on the rise. Academic monographs exploring the framework of and the theoretical approaches to political communication in China have appeared. “Today in the globalization, political communication has become an important political strategic issue. There is no doubt that traditional political communication strategies and approaches, as well as corresponding theoretical research on political communication, are all facing new challenges” (Jing and Shi 2009). Therefore, based on the retrospect of the development of political communication studies in China and from multidimensional perspectives, this chapter will summarize, examine, introspect, and analyze the internal logic of the generation and development of political communication and provide a basic foundation for future development of political communication in China. At the same time, the author expects responses, criticism, and correction from colleagues.
