Journalism theory is one of the core elements of journalism. Journalism is “the science of the laws of journalism” and covers the theoretical science and history of journalism, the practical science of interviewing, editing, and commenting, as well as policy and management (Gan 1982). In other words, the common understanding among academics is that journalism can be broadly divided into three parts: theory, history, and application. This chapter focuses on the development of journalism theory research in China from the period of reform and opening-up. From 1978 to 2018, with the rapid development of journalism, Chinese academia made significant achievements in journalism theory. Despite these advancements, however, many topics have yet to be explored (Zhao 2004).
