Shape Memory Alloy for Seismic Vibration Mitigation: A State-of-the-Art Review

A smart material called shape memory alloy (SMA) has properties such as superelasticity and shape memory that make it unique. In the last few decades, this smart material has drawn the significant attention of civil engineers and contractors to build more resilient high-rise structures. This study thoroughly reviews the existing application of SMA in vibration mitigation of structures, especially in buildings. In this paper, the core concepts of SMA, as well as the history of SMA materials, are explored. This paper also discusses the various compositions and properties of SMA and the hybridization of SMA with other vibration control systems. On the basis of the extensive literature analysis, significant conclusions are drawn, and the need for further research is recognized for the vibration control of buildings employing SMA devices.
