A Comprehensive Review on Augmentative and Alternative Communication Tools for Speech-Impaired Individuals
摘要
This research explores the transformative impact of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools, particularly those infused with artificial intelligence (AI), on individuals with speech disorders. Addressing a range of speech impairments and impediments, the study delves into the global accessibility offered by AI-driven AAC solutions, aiming to articulate the clear aims of the study and highlight substantial contributions. The evolution of technology, particularly in AAC, emerges as a promising avenue to alleviate challenges posed by speech disorders. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) stands out as a crucial means for individuals, especially those with speech disorders, to express themselves effectively. Modern AAC users leverage diverse communication modes, aided by high-tech devices, symbol boards, and mobile apps that enhance accessibility. Despite positive impacts identified in the review, challenges and gaps in current AAC applications are acknowledged. Notably, there’s a lack of seamless integration of speech recognition and reconstruction, emphasizing the critical necessity for future research to advance user-friendly AI-based AAC solutions. The study underscores the pivotal role of AI-powered AAC in improving language development, speech skills, and overall quality of life for individuals with speech disabilities. It advocates for future advancements to address existing limitations, emphasizing the integration of contextualization, region-specific language support, and cost-effective solutions in AI-based AAC applications. In conclusion, the research aims to illuminate the path forward, promoting inclusivity and enhanced communication for individuals with speech disabilities through advanced AI-infused AAC solutions.
