Exploring the Potential of Nano-Biomaterials in Tissue Engineering

Nano-biomaterials, an area at the interface of nanotechnologies and biomaterials, are revolutionized tissue engineering applications. They are typically regarded as mimicking the components of the cell microenvironment or as a material technique to instruct cells and to alter their behavior. Therefore, they comprehensively grasp the link between nanotechnologies and the resulting biological response. The present overview focused on recent advancements and the potential of nano-biomaterial in tissue engineering. Emphasis was given to different strategies employed for the nano-biomaterial generation for tissue engineering, such as 3D bioprinting, nanofiber, nanogel/hydrogel, nanocomposites, nano-bioglass, piezoelectric and carbon-based nanomaterial. Additionally, recent advancements in skin, bone, cardiac, neural, and retinal tissue regeneration using nano-biomaterial has been discussed. Finally, a special emphasis was placed on the challenges in clinical translation, regulatory prospectives, and future directions of using nano-biomaterials in tissue engineering.
