Glass/Glass–Ceramic-Polymer Composites for Biomedical Applications

Bioimplants for the body are designed to mimic and support the body tissues for their easy replication which necessitates them to behave like extracellular matrix and be biologically inert for provoking minimal tissue response. But this concept is modified nowadays, as implants for biomedical applications demands tremendous mechanical resistance towards any damage to sustain its structural configuration inside the body. Such concept evokes new biomaterials which can actively participate in release of ions from their matrix resulting in a change in chemical gradient leading to biological changes within the tissue. This concept helped in the evolution of many new and novel biomaterials like Glass–ceramic fibers composites which fall under class A biomaterials, and they almost fulfill the properties of an ideal and robust biomaterial for biomedical applications. Thus, the current chapter is mainly focused on the fabrication of glass–ceramic fiber composite system, their evaluations concerning cell proliferation studies and their varied applications as biomedical devices.
