Different Types of Fiber in Polymer Matrices for Biomedical Engineering

摘要

Fiber–reinforced polymers have been emerging as a promising candidate for biomedical application owing to their unique properties. Since biomedical applications mandates stringent safety aspects prior to its interaction with the human body, different types of reinforcing fibers, including bio-based fibers or synthetic ones such as carbon, glass, and aramid, have been tailored to integrate with the biological systems to ensure its compatibility. Apart from the nature of fibres and its characteristics, their interaction with the polymer matrices, significantly improve the composite’s overall performance. Several surface modifications on fibers were employed to augment the fiber-matrix interfacial adhesion and to mitigate the complications due to stress transferability of the composites. With a growing interest on environmental responsibility, future market will prioritize the development of eco-friendly fiber reinforced polymer materials. Relying on sustainable practices and life cycle assessment will ensure the development of next-generation devices and implants to address the evolving needs and preferences in healthcare sector.
