Determination of Diagnostic Reference Levels for General Radiography in Thorax, Abdomen, and Lumbar Spine Examinations at XYZ Hospital Using Tube Output Measurment

The use of X-rays can provide benefits as well as negative effects for patients. To maximize the benefits of X-rays, the negative effects of radiation should be minimized. Alternative way to minimize radiation effects is by monitoring and minimizing the dosage given to patients undergoing examinations. This can be achieved by implementing Diagnostic Reference Levels (DRL). This study aims to determine the DRL values for general radiography of the thorax, abdomen, and lumbar spine examinations at XYZ Hospital. The determination of DRL values involves the calculation of Entrance Surface Dose (ESD) based on data collected form 330 patients undergoing thorax, abdomen, and lumbar spine examinations. This process utilizes data form X-ray tube output measurements, patient information, an radiation exposure variables. Based on the calculations of the ESD, the deremined DRL values for thorax, abdomen, and lumbar spine examinations are 0.543 mGy, 0.73 mGy, and 0.911 mGy, respectively. These DRL were compared to IDRL (Indonesian Dianostic Reference Level) to assess the radiation dose optimization for thorax, abdomen, and lumbar spine examinations. DRL values for abdominal and lumbar spine examinations are lower than the IDRL values, indicating a potential dose reduction in these procedures. On the other hand, the DRL value for thorax examination is higher than the IDRL, suggesting a need for the further optimization to reduce radiation exposure in thorax imaging.
