Closing Remarks and Our Vision

In this final chapter, we provide a quick review of digital technologies covered in this book. A different view is given from the systems engineering perspective about the disciplinary nature of intelligent maintenance and management of bridges. We provide a positive outlook for the next five years on how intelligent maintenance and management for bridges will be implemented with broader sensing, deeper learning, and higher automating capabilities. Last, although it is a bold move, the authors provide a vision for a long-term future, wherein intelligent maintenance and management might have become a small fraction of our connected societies enabled by general artificial intelligence and other relevant technologies.
