Smart Digital Urometer for Monitoring Urine Volume and Specific Gravity in Critical Care Unit

Acute renal failure, kidney injury and end-stage kidney disease have adverse effects on urine output control and patient survival. Urine output is of paramount importance to guide fluid resuscitation in critically ill patients. Moreover, it is a signifier of renal perfusion. Hence, accurate measurement of urine output is preliminary in Critical Care Units (CCU). At present, urine output is quantified using urometer bags with graduated scales. Every hour, the nursing staff manually records the reading of the container of every patient and operates a valve that releases the urine into a large container. In critical care units, this procedure must be performed 24 h a day by the healthcare staff. As with any repetitive and monotonous task, this one is prone to errors. Moreover, a considerable number of resources are being wasted, including the expenditures for gloves and other disposables. The technology shown in this research substitutes conventional chores with cutting-edge instrumentation to increase patient safety and vital patient monitoring in a convenient and economical way. This device measures the urine output and specific gravity, which comprises a container that collects urine, with the output displayed, monitored using wireless transmission and discarded when necessary. It avoids invasive measurement with enhanced accuracy and ease of obtaining data.
