Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Textiles and Fashion

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its fields are strong tools for enhancing performance and productivity in textiles and fashion. Starting from design concepts to future forecasting of upcoming trends, there exist numerous applications of AI tools. Here, we summarized the working principles related to AI tools commonly used for textiles and fashion. The application of these tools for fault detection, quality assessment, and color assessment of textiles is discussed. Similarly, uses of AI tools in concept and design, production, logistics and distribution, retail, and fashion forecasting are explained. AI enhances production speed, decreases labor cost, improves the quality of production, and provides a variety of options to users, therefore its uses are currently emerging. Few of these applications are commercially used, however some of these tools are at the research stage. For example, there are numerous papers related to the application of AI for fabric fault detection, however, there are several limitations to be addressed for practical use. This chapter also provides future directions and a detailed summary of currently used AI tools in the textile and fashion industry.
