Robotic Thyroidectomy

Robotic Thyroidectomy represents a significant advancement in minimally invasive surgery for thyroid disorders. This chapter explores its evolution, highlighting benefits such as reduced postoperative morbidity, minimal pain, shorter hospital stays, and superior cosmetic outcomes compared to traditional open surgery. Using the da Vinci robotic system, surgeons gain enhanced precision and dexterity through three-dimensional visualization and articulated instruments. Various approaches, including trans-axillary, retro auricular, and trans-oral methods, are detailed regarding patient selection, preparation, techniques, and equipment. Ideal candidates include young women concerned about neck scarring and those with small to medium-sized thyroid nodules. Comparative analyses show similar complication rates between robotic and open thyroidectomy, but robotic procedures offer better cosmetic results and patient satisfaction. However, robotic thyroidectomy involves longer operating times and higher costs due to the expensive setup and specialized training required. Future advancements aim to improve safety and efficacy, with ongoing technological innovations and a call for standardized training and evidence collection to validate the procedure’s benefits.
