Preschoolers’ Mathematics

Studies have shown that children who perform poorly in mathematics at an early age exhibit poor mathematical performance later on. This finding, known as the Matthew effect, places great importance on early achievements in mathematics. Although preschoolers have only a little learning and practical experience in mathematics, evaluating their mathematical abilities to predict their later mathematical performances is valuable. To give a complete understanding of preschoolers’ mathematical abilities, three studies are further presented: a cross-cultural study, a parity judgment study, and a number comparison study. Then, some related factors, such as counting, language, and sports abilities, that can predict children’s mathematical and arithmetical development in depth are discussed.
