Intermedia Practice and Theoretical Reflections of Creative Writing: A Case Study of Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Upon the basis of intertextuality and intermediality, this paper uses my experience in teaching the course “Creative Writing Workshop” at Hong Kong Metropolitan University as a case study in this research to discuss the possibilities of crossing the boundary between textual creation and various media, and the implication of the practice of creative writing. This study considers intermedia creation an important constituent of Chinese creative writing studies and argues that using this form of creation as the teaching unit can guide students to think about how Chinese language and text can integrate with music, pictures, and cinematography in intermedia strategy. This chapter maintains that this pedagogy can train students in their creative thinking in integration of intermedia and, upon this basis, facilitate their thinking of the significance of texts of various media during the writing process, such that they can implement the writing practice of mutual interpretation. The intermedia practice of creative writing has a positive effect on promoting creative writing’s interdisciplinary development and can expand the research significance of Chinese creative writing. The application of such in teaching serves a very important role in developing the cultivation of Chinese intermedia cultural personnel in the new era and is the development foundation of creative writing pedagogy in China.
