Impact of Countdown Audio Cue in the Modified Bleep Test on Sedentary Male Youth

This study investigated the impact of a countdown audio cue in the Modified Bleep Test Group on aerobic capacity, measured by estimated VO2Max scores. Forty male youth participants (N = 40) aged 18–20 were randomly divided into the “Modified Bleep Test Group” (MBTG) with the audio cue and the “Normal Bleep Test Group” (NBTG) without the modification. The “Modified Bleep Test Group” achieved significantly higher estimated VO2Max scores (mean ± SD: 42 ± 3 ml/kg/min) compared to the “Normal Bleep Test Group” (mean ± SD: 38 ± 4 ml/kg/min). The audio cue likely improved temporal awareness and pacing, leading to better aerobic capacity. Auditory feedback in fitness testing protocols could optimize exercise experiences and enhance performance outcomes for sedentary male youth. Further research should validate and expand upon these findings in diverse populations, exploring how audio cues influence VO2Max scores during the bleep test. This study highlights the potential of audio cue feedback to improve fitness assessments and tailor exercise prescriptions to individual needs and capacities.
