In the automobile industry, regarding the driving sound, noise reduction corresponding to negative elimination has been extensively discussed. Recently, with rapid changes in terms of a shift from gasoline vehicles to the relatively quieter electric vehicles (EVs), research on driving sounds in EVs primarily focuses on the protection of pedestrian safety, which is a new problem due to quietness. However, product sound is an effective means of sensuously communicating product features to consumers. There is a lack of knowledge on promoting product features and appeals through EV driving sounds. Therefore, in this study, we clarified the effect of EV driving sounds on driving performance compared to gasoline vehicles. We produced promotional videos for a fictitious brand and conducted randomized controlled trials in an online survey environment. The results showed that the gasoline vehicle did not detect a significant effect, while the EV enhanced the perceived driving performance. In the past, the big driving sounds of sports cars attracted consumers; though, EVs are trending products for consumers today. Thus, the driving sound, which gives the impression of an EV, was considered fascinating. Existing literature on product noise has set the main purpose of reducing noise, but we believe that the purpose should be to embody the product concept. The importance of utilizing subjective factors such as driving sound is recommended, even if it is an objective feature of driving performance.
