Smart and Intelligent Transportation: Analyzing Economic Benefits of Digital Transformation for Trucking Industry in India with Making Fast-Tag Mandatory on Highways

The purpose of current study is to understand operation of trucking industry and impact of electronic toll on it especially after making Fast-tag mandatory via process of digital transformation under Digital India Program started by Government of India to enhance digital transformation given its impact on operation efficiency of various businesses. The study found that trucking operation enjoys economic benefits of digital transformation via Fast-tag mechanism as observed during conduct of the study. However, benefits are limited due to low level of penetration of digital transformation in trucking in particular. The major implication of the study is that the result is based on limited data and information due to Covid-19 pandemic (Second Wave). Nevertheless, this can form basis to understand the process of digital transformation and its application to enhance efficiency of trucking operation to solve its viability issue and many more. The utility of the study can be derived from the point that this paper is one of the few studies conducted recently that provides insight into process of digital transformation in trucking industry via Fast-tag mechanism and possible economic benefits derived from it.
