Analysis of the Accessibility of Airports to Urban Centers Using Navigation Maps - A Case Study of Beijing

Accessibility is the leading indicator of transport service. Improving the accessibility of airports to urban centers is an essential link to providing efficient and convenient door-to-door air travel services. As the basic element of accessibility is travel time, the case study of Beijing partitioned the urban center zone by the grid. It calculated the travel time between airports and geometry centers of the grid using a navigation map, based on which the accessibility of airports to urban centers was analyzed. The results show that both the Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA) and the Beijing Daxing International Airport (BDIA) can reach the urban center zone of Beijing within 30 min. The spatial patterns of the travel time from the two airports to the urban center zone share similarities, while noting that BCIA has better driving accessibility and the public transport accessibility of BDIA is better. Recommendations derived from the precise and in-depth analysis of the accessibility would facilitate better land-side transport planning and management and provide a transport point of view to city planning and upgrade.
