Complexities of International Development and Aid Projects

This chapter introduces the complexity inherent in International Development and Aid Projects (IDAPs), particularly those managed by International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs). It highlights that both internal and external factors contribute to project complexity, including human behavior, environmental factors, socio-political aspects, and the project setting. The chapter highlights the high-risk nature of IDAPs due to their foreign contexts and socio-political intricacies. It also discusses the additional challenges posed by donor pressures, local trust issues, political and legislative concerns, security risks, and stakeholder diversity. Furthermore, it explores the need for effective coordination and complementation among INGOs to mitigate competition-induced inefficiencies and improve project outcomes. The chapter concludes by underscoring the necessity of balancing donor agendas with local needs to achieve sustainable development goals.
