Introduction

This chapter introduces the critical role of International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs) in helping vulnerable populations, using the personal story of a child Palestinian refugee to highlight the complexities of aid distribution. It details the evolution and functions of INGOs, emphasizing their humanitarian missions and disaster recovery. The chapter examines these organizations’ managerial and political challenges, especially in crisis areas like the Middle East, and critiques traditional aid approaches. It advocates for a value-driven, performance-oriented project management model to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of aid projects.
