The Effect of Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 on Weld Bead Geometry Using Activated Metal Inert Gas Welding

This experimental study is used to investigate the effect of single component oxide flux on the weld bead geometry (weld penetration, weld width, weld reinforcement and dilution) using activated metal inert gas (AMIG) welding on mild steel. Two different single component oxide fluxes are used such as Fe2O3 and Cr2O3 on 12-mm-thick mild steel plate. Experiments are conducted on two different voltages such as 22 and 25 V keeping the rest of the welding parameters as constant. Based on the results, the effect of reverse Marangoni (centripetal convection) and arc constricted increases penetration and dilution using AMIG. Maximum penetration and dilution are achieved with Fe2O3 flux at 25 V.
