Study of Friction Stir Processing on Al2219 Alloy, Surface Fabricated with B4C and Graphite Particulates

Friction stir processing is used to create hybrid surface composite layer of Al2219-B4C-graphite which enhances the tribological and microstructural characteristics. There were two types of specimens made. Specimen 1–friction stir processing was performed on base metal. Specimen 2–friction stir processing was performed on Al2219 plate with reinforcements. The processing direction was rotated by 180 degrees in between each pass. Wear analysis was done on base material, specimen 1–FSP performed on base metal, and specimen 2–FSP performed on base metal with reinforcements, using pin-on-disc apparatus followed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Specimen 2 showed significant decrease in wear rate.
