Study of Dry Sliding Wear Behaviour of Aluminium MMC

Al/ B4C-Ni composites are highly desirable materials for use in the automotive and aerospace industries owing to their unique combination of characteristics. Al/B4C composites can be created using a variety of procedures, although stir casting is the most widely used method because it is the simplest and most affordable method. Nickel reinforcement in aluminium-based composites helps reduce the rate of abrasive wear. The quality of the bulk material is the focus of this study. Owing to their promising wear-resistance qualities, reinforcing materials, including nickel and boron carbide, are employed. An aluminium metal matrix composite is fabricated using the stir-casting method, and the specimen is subsequently heated to boost the hardness of the composite. A Rockwell Hardness test was performed to check the hardness of the composite, and the results showed that the Al2219/6%Ni/1%B4C composite was harder than Al2219/1%Ni/1%B4C. Wear Analysis was performed using a Pin-on-Disc apparatus followed by Scanning Electron Microscopy. The wear test results show that Al2219/6%Ni/1%B4C composites have significantly higher wear resistance.
