Industrial Ecology in Food Supply Chain

Industrial ecology in the food supply chain is a holistic approach that aims to optimize resource use and minimize waste through sustainable practices. It involves analyzing and improving the flow of materials and energy through food products’ production, processing, distribution, consumption, and disposal systems. The concept integrates principles from industrial ecology with the food supply chain to create a more sustainable and efficient system. This includes practices like waste minimization, Industrial symbiosis, and life cycle assessment. Based on the starting statement, the chapter examines the fundamental factors contributing to inefficiencies in the food supply chain in developing countries, intending to devise approaches to establish a more resilient and sustainable system. This investigation offers insights into the fundamental challenges that impact the food supply chain. An exhaustive literature review is done before conducting the study to establish a theoretical foundation. By employing a qualitative research approach, this study identifies barriers to a sustainable food supply through unstructured interview questions with critical stakeholders and rice processing mills in Pakistan.
