Game Behavior Within the Intersection

A road network comprises interconnected roads and intersections, where the evaluation of intersection capacity traditionally involves summing the capacities of individual lanes at each approach. However, during peak hours or at complex intersections, vehicles often become trapped within the intersection, leading to competition and a subsequent decrease in capacity. Existing microscopic traffic models, such as the gap acceptance model, fail to capture this phenomenon. In this chapter, we address this issue by introducing a game theoretical model that accounts for vehicle behavior within intersections. Specifically, we fit speed profiles of vehicles traversing the intersection and analyze the game behavior of vehicles at the intersection outlet. We derive the Nash equilibrium and simulate the system using a dedicated procedure. The obtained results serve to calibrate the outlet saturation flow rate, enhancing the accuracy of intersection capacity evaluation.
